Located in the heart of what is known as Silicon valley, Santa Clara University is the site of the Teilhard for a New Generation Conference. Founded in 1851 by the Society of Jesus on the site of the Santa Clara Mission, SCU is recognized as California's oldest operating institution of higher learning. This 106-acre campus, at the southern tip of the San Francisco Bay, is approximately two miles from San Jose International Airport. Geographically the Silicon Valley stretches from the Santa Cruz mountains in the southwest to the Diablo range in the northeast and encompasses several cities, the largest of which are the cities of San Jose and Santa Clara. Today, this once primarily agricultural area, is an urban metropolitan region and a hub for high tech innovators, manufacturers and engineers. Despite the current economic slow down, Silicon valley continues to maintain its status as one of the top research and development centers in the world. This area enjoys a moderate mediteranean type climate year-round; the sun shines approximately 300 days a year.
